SPOOKS AND OSCAR

Hi there Doc,

Our great dane Oscar has started barking for no reason at all, well we think there's no reason - what help is there as this is going to have an affect on the neighbours - it's mostly at night, he's 7 months old, what may he be in need of...we have given him a fluffy toy which he loves and also an old garmet with out scent but he still barks, could he be need more exercise, he seems happy always ready to play, and because we moan at him he stays away from his food and only after he's "sulking" period is over does he eat - where can I find facts about this breed!

Thank you

Hi Olive
Many puppies go through a barking stage at about this age, especially if they sleep outside. It sounds like he has everything he needs. Don't over-exercise him (5 mins to half an hour a day is plenty for this big breed). Is he getting enough food according to his weight, last meal in the evening before bedtime? Is he warm enough at night? The best thing to do about the barking is to ignore it totally. If he gets a face shouting at him from the window it may be just what he wanted and so this can become an attention-seeking behaviour. Try giving him a dose of Rescue Remedy or Valerian (ask your vet for dosage) just before you go to bed at night for a week or so. This should make him sleep better and hopefully break the pattern. He should be inside ....

Any dog breed from great dane to chihowhow (can never spell it) needs the following

A home to live in surrounded by his "pack"...unless of course his humans live in the garden then its acceptable for the dog.

Training and love .... just like a child , and they are betther than kids ..they dont drink, take drugs or smash yr car .

A 7-month-old dog is still a baby. He needs to learn how to behave, and it's your job to teach him this without terrorising him out of his wits.

Can't you let him sleep inside?

Try dogbreedinfo dot com or epets dot co dot za. Also, do a search for the website of the Great Dane Association.
