What are the side-effects of yellow fever innoculation? We will be travelling to Zanzibar shortly. Vaccination is compulsory at least 10 days before arriving in Zanzibar. Are citronella products effective as additional deterrant? Should medication against malaria also be taken? Thank you

YF, the most common side effects are a stinging sensation in the area of the injection, headaches, muscle aches and sometimes a low grade fever. It doesn’t cause any serious problems as long as you’re not allergic to egg protein. The disease is spread by mosquitoes and any mosquito deterrents would be better than none.
Malaria prophylaxis (Lariam® or Mefliam®) is also recommended. Good luck.
