Should I use an indwelling catheter?

RE: RE: Indwelling Catheter Usage
As a 68 yr. old male, I do intermittentf-catheterization 3 times daily plus generally once during the night. Urination between catheterizing is very difficult or not ossible. I can urinate normallyt when near-full.

Trying to catheterize more than 3-times daily is impractical enough to be impossible, since I still work. Does wearing a Foley type catheter make sense for me? Conversely, say alternating -- one month intermittent catI heterization, one month wearing a Foley.

I understand wearing a Foley is not particulalry pleasant but neither is the frustration of feeling a strong urge to urinate but not being able to. Thus making numerous unproductive bathroom visits. I also understand long-term Foley use is supposedly not recommended.

I would appreciate some advice on my dilemma. I have had prostrate cancer treated/cured with radiation therapy a year earlier.

Dear Hank
We usually try to avoid using an indwelling catheter if possible – it tends to cause infections and calcifications in the bladder and may cause serious kidney complications. However, I can understand your frustration. What is the reason for the difficulty in urinating – do you know whether the problem lies with the bladder wall muscle or the sphincter muscle ? Maybe you should get a second opinion from an urologist that specializes in prostate cancer about your options (like Dr Lance Coetzee in Pretoria)
