Some useful information:

- Diabetes can be caused by a typical Western diet of excessive refined starches, sugar, fizzy drinks, sweets and fruit juices.
- Excessive consumption of saturated animal fats also contributes to the onset of diabetes.
- Nutritional deficiencies suffered by the body for years due to a diet of refined foods will ultimately cause the breakdown of vital organs.
- Excessive stress together with lifestyle habits of smoking, drinking alcohol, large amounts of coffee will contribute to a reduced flow of blood to the pancreas, ultimately resulting in diabetes.
- Severe shock, restricting flow of blood to vital organs, can often result in diabetes.
- A sedentary lifestyle, obesity and lack of exercise, together with worry and bad food habits, all lead to destruction of vital organs.
- Pancreatitis, an inflammatory disease of the pancreas, caused by alcohol consumption, excessive intake of fizzy drinks and sugar, can be the forerunner of diabetes later in life.
- Cancer of the pancreas, or pancreatic tumours, can also be the cause of elevated blood sugar levels.
- General toxicity and poor elimination can contribute to the development of sugar diabetes.
- Pregnancy requires extra insulin. A latent diabetic state can be triggered by pregnancy.
- Severe infections, whether viral, bacterial and fungal, can trigger a diabetic reaction due to the body’s increased insulin requirements at this time.
- A genetic predisposition can cause you to be more susceptible to this condition.

Some useful Advice from Dr Vogel

Next to the liver, the most important organ in our digestive system is the pancreas, yet it weighs only about one-twentieth of that of the liver. This small, elongated gland is located above the navel between the posterior stomach wall and the spine; below it lies the horseshoe-shaped loop of the first part of the small intestine. The left end touches the spleen and the left kidney. Small it may be, but it performs two important functions, producing an external secretion to be poured into the duodenum and an internal one to be poured into the blood.

Embedded in the pancreas we find some peculiar cell formations, shaped rather like blackberries. They are actually small glands, but not in the least connected with the other glands. Like islands in the bigger gland, they are called the islets of Langerhans, after their discoverer, Paul Langerhans, The vital substance insulin is produced in these small glands and sent straight into the blood, not the small intestine. If these islets do not manufacture sufficient insulin, the glycogen, the sugar stored in the liver and passed on to the blood in accordance with the body’s need, will not be burned up, so that the blood sugar level rises. The excess is excreted through the kidneys, which is why sugar is found in the urine. This is a symptom of the disease known as diabetes.

Proper Care of the Pancreas

Diabetics and anyone who has bad digestion need to know what to do to help the pancreas function efficiently. Since the blood carries nutrients and remedial substances to the parts of the body it can reach, the primary requirement is to stimulate the circulation. Take hot showers or apply moist hot packs for this purpose; herbal packs are especially good. As regards medicines, only few are known to act specifically on the pancreas. One such, sour whey as contained in Molkosan, is rich in vegetation, rennin and lactic acid and gives good results.

A number of food items must be avoided completely, for example all boiled protein foods and the combination of fat, protein and sugar, either cooked or fried. Hot spices should also be avoided; use culinary herbs from the garden instead. The protein foods best tolerated are sour milk products. Prepare salads with a little cold-pressed oil and Molkosan. Of curative effect are bilberry (blueberry) juice, blackcurrant juice, weak herb teas, and occasionally a little buttermilk.

As already stated, fasting is an excellent means of resting the pancreas. Moreover, whatever the patient eats, it is important to ingest small quantities, chew everything thoroughly and in-salivate well before swallowing. These are inexpensive ways and means of supporting the pancreas in the healing process. If you feel a slight pain after eating, you have probably had something that did not agree with you, did not chew your food well enough, drank too fast or ate too much. The answer to the problem is in the patient himself; he should watch himself carefully to avoid unpleasant reactions.

Regular deep-breathing exercises, with diaphragm-breathing, practised in the open air, are also effective and promote the healing process at the same time. In conclusion then, breathing exercises, together with a proper diet, warm water therapy and moist hot herbal packs, will help to rectify any condition where the pancreas is weak or upset. Many a serious, chronic ailment can be prevented if its proper function is restored. All it needs is a little understanding and perseverance with the treatment.

Advice on how to handle Diabetes:
• Diet
• Exercise
• Blood Glucose monitoring

These are the most important aspects of diabetes management

Diet:
• The diabetic diet is not a special diet. It is a normal healthy diet which should be high in fibre and low in sugar and in fat. The food you eat directly affects your blood sugar levels. Following a healthy eating plan will assist to control and to maintain normal blood sugar levels.
• Eat regular meals which contain small amounts of unrefined carbohydrates throughout the day. For example, eat regular small quantities of oats, mealie meal, maltabella, brown rice, lentils, barley, etc. Avoid white flour products.
• Reduce fried and salty foods. Replace with steamed, grilled, baked or boiled foods. Use cold pressed oils, natural unsalted butter instead of margarine and other heated and refined cooking and salad oils. Regularly eat raw seeds and raw nuts to provide adequate quantities of essential fatty acids which is often lacking.
• Avoid sugar and fruit juices altogether. Rather develop a habit of drinking water or weak herbal teas. Try not to develop a liking for artificial sweeteners as they are chemically based with potential harm to the body.
• Do not overeat. Excessive hunger is typical of diabetes which often leads to obesity. Rather eat small quantities of good food often.
• Use Dr Vogel’s Herbamare and Trocomare as a seasoning salt. Excessive consumption of table salt will lead to the further depletion of vital minerals in diabetics. Dr Vogel’s herbal salt will be very good to flavour food in an appetising way while providing traces of vital elements due to the unique composition of herbs, sea salt and sea vegetables.
• Avoid alcohol on an empty stomach. Alcohol will increase blood sugar levels and should therefore be used on special occasions only, with meals.
• Learn to eat natural foods in the least tampered way. Special diabetic foods are costly and not always as nourishing as natural foods.
• Fruits can be eaten in moderation. Green apples and Kiwi fruit is of special value together with ripe berries when in season.
• Protein foods such as lean cuts of meat or grilled or steamed fish can be eaten in moderation.
• Remember, a diabetic diet is not any different from a diet followed by a healthy person wanting to keep well. The same rules apply. Please carefully read the Healthy Living Diet Sheet.

Exercise
Regular daily exercise is essential to maintain a healthy body. Exercise does not only improve general wellbeing, it also enhances the body’s sensitivity to insulin, thereby ensuring proper assimilation of this hormone into cells. Exercise also lowers levels of blood glucose, aids weight loss, and lowered blood pressure. Patients on insulin should exercise on a regular predictable schedule. Do not engage in very strenuous exercise if your blood sugar is poorly controlled.

Regular Blood Sugar Monitoring
It is vital for you to know what your blood sugar levels are every day. Invest in a good glucometer to read the blood levels daily. Keep proper records, daily, of your blood reading. The long-term danger of diabetes is the effect it has on the nerves of the eyes, affecting eyesight. It is also damaging to the kidneys causing renal failure. Poor circulation to the hands and feet can lead to amputations. All of this needs to be prevented by the proper treatment and control of blood sugar levels. You can only treat and prevent damage if you know your blood sugar levels! Take it easy!
