The reason why nutrition and medical experts recommend that we should reduce our salt or rather our Sodium intake (table salt is sodium chloride), is that excessive intakes can cause an increase in blood pressure (hypertension) particularly in individuals who are 'salt sensitive'. In addition eating too much salt can damage the kidneys. Ideally we should only eat about 2500 mg (2,5g) of sodium a day, but because of our western lifestyle most people ingest much more salt every day. It is a good idea to reduce the intake of processed foods which have high sodium contents (from table salt, MSG and other sodium compounds) and not to add excessive amounts of salt to one's food.
