Risperidone (risperdal)is generally used to treat mental disorders often characterized by distorted thoughts, perceptions and emotions. It is also effective in treating conditions associated with lack of emotion, social withdrawal, depression, guilt feelings or anxiety. More recently is has also been approved for the treatment of bipolar affective disorder (manic depression).
It works by altering the activity of certain chemical messengers in the central nervous system to produce a tranquilizing and antipsychotic effects. Dopamine and serotonin are neurotransmitters known to be involved in regulating mood and behaviour, amongst other things - Risperidone, however, seems to target receptors in the brain that dopamine acts on.
