I work in the medical industry. Sales reps can go into theatre provided they are there in an advisory position, e.g. to guide a doctor in the use of their products, to show a new technique, which sizes suits which patients, etc.

They are ABSOLUTELY NOT ALLOWED to have anything whatsoever to do with the patient.

So, your friend is talking bull.

Yes, it may be permissable if they are there in a purely advisory capacity ( though its sad if a doctor needs to learn from someone with much less training than him ). But it is FAR from safe to assume that the friend is talking bull - such events HAVE been reported and have caused serious problems in the past ; they are possible. One hopes, of course, that the rep was bragging and inventing and not accurate, but its not fair or safe to assume that,
