Our expert says:
The difference between pure protein and whey protein, is that one can extract pure protein from any good source of protein (e.g. meat, fish, eggs, milk, soya, etc), while whey protein is the protein specifically extracted from whey (the liquid that is obtained when milk is separated into cream and whey). So a pure protein source could be derived from eggs (e.g. albumin) or milk (casein) etc, while whey protein is always derived from the liquid fraction of milk.
