Piercing and theatre procedure

Why do I need to remove my piercing (Genital) for theatre procedures and what if I can not remove them? I prefer to tell the nurse that I do not have any piercing.

as far as i know you have to tell them. can you not by anychance put a plaster over it (my toe ring doesn't come off and a plaster was sufficient to cover). they require you to remove them incase they need to do an emergency xray.
