Our miniture dashund recently started showing signs of being pregnant. swollen tummy, milk, restlessness, no apitite. we took her to the vet as she did not want to give birth and was told that she had a Phantom pregnancy. he told us that he had to sterilize her, as she could get infection, which could be fatal. is it possible for a dog to have a phantom pregnancy and is it necessary to have her sterilized, as we would like to let her have puppies at some stage. Please advise

Dear Anon

Some dogs are prone to phantom pregnancies and get this with every season. You do not have to sterilize her if you want her to have a litter of puppies.
