Pap smears

Does a pap smear pick up all types of infections as well as cancer cells? I had one a little while ago and it was clear for cancer, BUT I KNOW, I had some sort of infection at the time as there was an odour, but doc never said anything about this. Is it better to take a swab for infection than a pap smear?
