OM JOUSELF SEER TE MAAK

Liewe Dokter,
Ek wil weet hoekom daar mense is wat hulleself seer maak. En ek bedoel seer maak met 'n skerp voorwerp of so, en dit dan wegsteek. Ek het 'n vriend, en het uitgevind dat hy dit doen. Hy se hulle noem mense soos hy 'n masogis.

Dankie

Hello Nelly,
Well, there is a condition called masochism, in which people seem to enjoy pain and hurt, just as there is Sadism, in which people enjoy horting someone else ; so one of each could be a satisfied couple ! ut your friend could have a more complicated problem we call self-mutilation. If you search the archives of this forum for such terms as "self-mutilation" and "cutting" you'll find we've discussed it rather often.
These are usualyl people with a variety of personality disorder, who under various circumstances are more likely than most of us to feel exaggeratedly abandoned and alone, and when they get to feel very anxious indeed, then swtich off, as it were, and feel very strange and cut-off, and then think of cutting themselves, and find it temporarily makes them feel a bit better --- and they are generally very secretive about this, as they are sure nobody else will understand. They should be advised to see a shrink for a proper in-depth assessment, and then a discussion of their treatment choices.

Haai Nellie. Soos die kopdok se is dit eintlik 'n verplasing van emosionele pyn met fisiese pyn. Fisiese pyn kan mens soms beter verwerk as emosionele pyn.

After all the talk of people coming here to help others I'm surprised that no-one has posted an answer to this one. Too busy posing and acting, I suppose.

The phenomenon is commonly called "cutting". Type the word "cutting" in the Keyword box in the search facility and read the posts that come up. Or you can visit www . recoveryourlife .com for more information.
