Our expert says:
There are always new antidepressants coming out, and in the earliest stages only the most promising POSSIBLE benefits are reported.
There have indeed been some newer ADs developed which work mainly on different chemical pathways to the older established ADS, and some might indeed have less likelihood of causing sexual side-effects. Only time will tell.
A load of research is required before any new drug can be released on the market, but this uses methods which are useful in some ways, but tend to a bias in favour of the new drug. Only when it is released and much more widely used, IF it is then properly evaluated ( which is usually neither required nor funded ) can one then get a better snse of its best place among the alternatives available
Some GPs and shrinks, unfortunately, are too keen to leap on any new druig and prescribe it for everyone, rather than taking the time to use it more cautiously and discover its actual advantages and disadvantages.
