Neutral Spine

What is the dis/advantages of working out with a neutral spine vs. a flat back pressed into the floor?

Between various piltaes instructors, yoga & gym teachers, physios & chiropractors I'be had conflicting advice. Which is the correct method- and does it really make a difference?
