Menstrual problems at age 46

Hi Doc

I am 46 next month. Had 2 children, youngest 13 this year. My last gynae check-up and pap smear end of last year was clear. I have never had gynaecological problems. Very lucky! Menstruation always pain free, regular and +- 2,5 days. No family history of problems. Used Triphasal until 3 years ago. No contraceptives used at the moment. Not sexually active.

I have noticed my last 3 or 4 menstruations were a bit eratic, accompanies by bloated tummy, and soreness when I contract my stomach muscles. This month has been quite bad. I was bloated for about a week before, and had particularly heavy flow for four full days. It's been a week since I stopped menstruating and I still feel bloated and sensitive. My breasts also feel sensitive and heavier than normal.

What's happening here? What would be the solution?

It sounds like perimenopause. Periods often become irregular before they stop altogether. You could think of using HRT.
