Low Ferritin Levels

Hi There - My Mom-in-law (aged 70) has recently (after much nagging) had a medical check-up. She has been pale and tired for ages and susceptible to every virus that has come along. Anway, her full blood count has apparently come back with extremely low ferritin levels at 3.27. Years ago she had a problem with Aplastic Anaemia and we are concerned that this might be recurring. Her Haemoglobin is better than we had epected at 10.8 but we are worried about the Ferritin level. Any suggestions? Her GP has prescribed 1 x Autrin and Vitamin C a day and told her to come back in 6 months but we're wondering if further investigation is indicated. What would you advise?

Anaemic?, at her age the least one has to do is to make sure that she isn’t losing iron because of gastro-intestinal blood loss. It may of course be due to taking too little iron, but it is more commonly due to loss. The best person to help with these investigation is a gastroenterologist. Good luck.
