Our expert says:
Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby boy - you must feel so thrilled. If you are going to breastfeed the lad, then please don't use any very-low-energy diets and/or excessive exercise to lose weight. Breastfeeding is the single most precious thing you can give your son which will influence his health for the rest of this life, so that comes first. You can try eating an energy-reduced, low-fat, high-fibre diet (click on 'Diet' at the top of this page, 'Weight loss', ‘Balanced diet' and then on 'Slimming Diet' for a copy of such a diet), but add another 2 cups of fat-free milk or yoghurt a day to ensure that you and baby obtain sufficient calcium for your needs. Increase your energy output by doing regular healthy exercise every day when you have healed completely (check with your gynae and don't start exercising too early - your body must heal first). For example, you can take baby for walks in the fresh air in his pram for 30 min a day when you have recovered.
Enjoy your baby
