Our expert says:
Not that I am aware off, usually you have to be 100% brain dead before they take you off life support, the heart may beat and the patient may breathe, but the EEG (brain waves) should be 100% flat.
However, due to the very high cost of artifical life support and the need for beds in ICU, some hospitals may have "rules" whereby they decide when to take a patient off life support, in order to be able to help other patients that may have a better chance of survival. This usually happens in state hospitals where there is limited budget and facilities. It is always a terribly hard decision to make.
