Large Weight Loss and Gall Bladder Problems

Hi Doc
My brother lost 50kgs over a 6 month period and then about a month afterwards, started having severe cramps. His GP discovered that his Gall Bladder was ready to burst and suggested it might have been caused by his rapid weight loss. Is this true? Many thanks!

Dear Melanie
You don't mention what kind of diet your brother used to lose this massive amount of weight? If he used a high-fat, high-protein diet then this could have exacerbated any gallstones he may have had. If he used a low-fat diet to lose weight it is highly unlikely that this would have caused his gallbladder problems because a low-fat diet is prescribed for individuals with such problems.
