Jack Russel skin rash

Our longlegged Jack Russel ( female) has had a bad rash under her hind leg for over a year now - is it the food that is casuing it or the dry highveld air, or the grass??

Dear Drylemon

Skin conditions, even if you see the dog, is difficult to treat. If this is been ongoing for a year and not seasonal and only under a hind leg, its time to go and spend some money at the vet.

If the rash has been there for a year, then presumably the dog has been seen by a vet during that time - what' s he say?

This could have umpteen causes - dietary allergy is only one, and frankly it sounds unlikely to me, since those kinds of allergies aren' t going to only show up in one place.

Does the dog lick the area a lot?

Hi Drylemon. We also own a Jack Russel (shortlegged) who also gets a rash under both her front legs and on her stomach. Our local vet indicated to us that it is rather common amongst Jack Russels and suggested that we put her on Hills ZD (low Allergenic) food. This we did with some measure of success. Hope this helps.
