IVF cycles vs FSH levels

Hi Doc,

Would an increase in the number of IVF cycles a woman has cause her FSH levels to increase? Also could AMH decline due to depletion of egg reserves due to the high doses of gonadtrophins?

Dear Dee GTC

It is possible that with numerous IVF cylces one would perhaps eventually cause a high FSH and a decline in your anti-mullerian factor level. So yes high FSH levels and low AMH levels are related to a poor ovarian reserve. High doses of FSH are used in IVF to stimulate multiple follicles. However it is also important to understand that in a natural cycle there are many follicles, probably between 20 – 30 that start of and one will only eventually reach final maturation. The rest however would become atrophic. So theoretically, it is possible, however I would assume that you would need to have undergone many IVF cycles to cause a high FSH level.
