Is she faking

Dear CS my SIL has been in and out of hospital this year she is being treated for depression the days that she is out of hospital she spends going to beauty salons to get waxed, manicures, hair etc. The reason she is depressed is because she is in financial debt running up clothing accounts. The whole family seems to be tired of visiting her in hospital so hardly go and her latest stunt was to overdose. Everybody was in shock when we visited her she was so happy like nothing happened. Her 4 and 2yr old witness the whole thing. She then starts to ask for chips and chocolates ans sweets like a baby. She then phones her maid and tells her to send her toiletries and favourite pj' s like she' s on vacation. And before we left she says she might be pregnant. How can she be hospitalised for so long when its so obvious she wants attention.

SOunds like a ridiculous way to manage the problems you describe. If one is depressed due to financial problems, it's obvious that the first step is to solve the financial problems and the silly over-spending --- not to waste more money admitting her to hospital. And Antidepressants do not treat over-spending. It's possible she may have a form of bipolar disorder, and in mani ( "high" ( phases, may typically overspend. And some interventions are also obvious --- she should be blacklisted on all the cedit agencies, so she closes all clothing accounts, and can't get a credit card at all. The attention-seeking and manipulative behaviour is not typical of depression or bipolar disorder, but of a personality disorder, whcih needs a clever shrink uing proper psychotherapy to try to control, not drugs. She seems to have learned that she has a Get Out of Jail Free Card, and easy excuse for any of her selfish and foolish behaviour, by claiming to be depressed and fleeing into hospital, If she is short of money, she should do the housework herself, and not have a maid at all. How does her husband and famil fit into all this ?
At least a second opinion from a completely independent shrink would be wise
