IQ is actually a controversial concept, and many of us don't consider it to represent the sort of general level of intelligence it was intended to measure, and really not to reflect understanding rather than a certain type of intelligent activity. It was originally devised as a way of identifying workers likely to be able to benefit from training, and similarly to identify army recruits likely to be capable. It is usually, as measured very culture-bound, that is, the questions usually asked assume a certain level of knowledge of a particular culture, and so the scores may under-represent the actual intelligence of people from other cultures
