Our expert says:
As far as procedures go, it all depends on how far on the gender reasignment journey you want to "travel"
There is to begin with, hormone replacement, the removel of facial hair, contouring of the adams apple, breast implants, and the actual vagina construction. Then some people sometimes do a little bit of plastic surgery afterwards, to give the face an even more feminine look, eg let the surgeon do work on the nose, jaw line etc.
Costs vary from the one procedure to the next.
Hormone replacement can cost you between 6 - 8 houndred rand per month, lazer hair removal, depending on how "stubborn" your hair is, can cost you up to 9 thousand rand.
For surgery in South Africa, I don't have a cost. You can eithe go through goverment hospital system, wich can take you a few good years, alternatively private.
The costs of the gender reasignment can be around R60 000.00 in Taiwan - depending on the exchange rate at the time. I doubt if it will be any cheaper in SA, maybe more or less the same.
There is much more operations done in Taiwan, hence the reason for people to opt for that alternative. Keep in mind, to also budget for air ticket, and accomodation. You need to be about two weeks still staying there, before you can travel back.
