Our expert says:
It should not be used for longer than five days. In certain cases, under instruction from your doctor, a slightly longer period may be required, but this will never exceed 7 days. The problem is that the drug has a rebound effect after prolonged use, as it works on the sympathetic nervous system, and causes less bloodflow to the nose. An extended period will create permanent damage to the lining of the nose, causing the condition called Rhinitis Medicamentosa. This is a very unfortunate, permanent condition that renders the nose unable to produse mucosa, resulting in foulsmelling crusting of the nasal lining.
