Our expert says:
The most important aspect of flax seed oil is that there is good evidence that it lowers the risk for heart disease in a similar way to the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils. Flax contains alpha-linoleic acid, a precusor to omega-3 fatty acids. Thus it is a good alternative to fish oil, although not as potent. It's fine to take flax oil (and fish oil) in pill form, but, as is the case with most supplements, it's more effective to get the nutrient from foods. You can buy flax seeds and oil, or foods that contain flax, at many health food stores.
