I need to know more on Cortisone

Hi,

I urgently need to know more information on the long term effects of cortisone. i.e. constantly taking the drug orally 80 - 90% of the year to improve ones quality of life.

I would just like a list of all the side effects from prolonged use of this drug please.

Kind Regards,

Emma

Dear Emma CT
Long term side effects of cortisone(steroids) use can be :
Moon shaped face, weight gain, easy bruising, insomnia, irritability or depression, diabetes, glaucoma, high blood cholesterol, cateracts, muscle weakness and brittle bones.
Some people have diseases that will make them much sicker than these side effects if you don't keep it under control with steroids so one has to weigh the pro's and con's when deciding to prescribe this longterm or not.

What exactly do you mean by "improve one's quality of life"? Are you referring to ongoing pain/swelling problems? If it is an ongoing pain problem you should be seeking treatment from a pain specialist or sorting out persistent swelling problems through the correct channels, i.e. doctor/physio treatment. If the use is for other purposes, such as the same reasons people use steroids, this is definitely not advisable. Cortisone treatment is designed for short term use only.

Pain and swelling are the 2 main reasons for cortisone treatment being administered.

No good doctor would recommend permanent long term use of cortisone treatment, as the damage/side effects are too great, i.e. amongst a long list of other things it can cause damage to the skin. In any case, you cannot get cortisone treatment of any sort without a prescription and pharmacies wont give it out with such a prescription, so doctors would limit such use anyway.

Type in "side effects of cortisone" on the Google website and you will find many different sites to look at. Also go the South African Electronic Pages Insert guide website (it lists all drugs and all their details, i.e. contra-indications, directions for use, side effects etc. Type the above in on Google to find their website.
