Gosh, so many different possible causes, physical, psych, or chemical. As Joanne says -- uncomfortable bed, eating a big meal too late and too soon before trying to sleep, drinking alcohol, coffee, or cola within hours of bedtime ; depression ; and physical disorders causing pain and discomfort --- many possible causes. If there's no obvious cause, try avoiding stimulants after 4 pm, reading a boring book in bed, a warm milky drink ( Milo, Ovaltine, etc ) ; and if after 10 minutes you're not getting to sleep, don't lie there tossing and turning, but get up, go to another room, and sit for a while watching dull TV or again reading a calming book, or doing minor house chores, till you feel tired, when you go back to bed and try again
