Research indicates that if you have some carbohydrate shortly after intensive exercise the carbohydrate is used by the body to replenish the so-called glycogen stores in the muscles and the liver. The next time you exercise you will, therefore, have a source of energy available in the glycogen and be able to sustain your performance without getting so tired. One of the best post-exercise drinks which is rich in nutrients is flavoured milk. You can also have 150 ml of fruit juice or even a slice of bread with a bit of jam (no fats though). Athletes often also use sports drinks (full strength or diluted) during exercise to ensure that they have sufficient energy to complete their training and also to prevent an increase in respiratory infections. If you are still so hungry at your next meal, eat plenty of pasta (preferably made from Durum wheat so that it is low GI) with a low-fat sauce like tomato and vegetable sauce or Bolognaise sauce made with very lean mince.
