HIV

Hello Doctor,

Thanks for your answer in 19276 regarding HIV survival in tap water. Approximately how long is a short while if say the tap water contained a drop of HIV blood?

Marlise, most scientific papers give a time of 1-2 hours before 90% of all viruses are killed. This may sound like you have a 10% chance of becoming infected, but the dilution factor is so big that not even sewage workers are at risk of becoming infected with HIV from the water. The fact that most tap water is chlorinated makes it even less likely. Good lluck.
