Our expert says:
If one of the heart valves does not close properly or the valve is diseased and the opening narrowed, instead of hearing "lub dub" when you listen to the heart, you may hear "swoosh dub" - the swoosh sound is called a heart murmur and is caused by turbulence through the valve. Healthy young people or pregnant women can have a type of murmur that can be "normal" due to increased blood circulation. If the doctor suspects a murmur due to a heart valve problem they will normally do a heart sonar to confirm.
