Our expert says:
Dropsy is a condition where the water balance of the fish is disturbed and excess fluid builds up in the body- usually due to underlying kidney disease, which could be due to a bacterial infection, viral infection, toxins or cancer. So this is a symtom, not a disease. This said, adding salt to the water helps many fish maintain their water balance, and bacterial disaese can be treated by antibiotics, provided the damage is not too severe.
