Just make sure you get a 3rd generation one so she will be able download current apps and games. Also parental control is very easy to set on the device so you have no worries. My 9 year old daughter has one and she has tons of fun with it and has got more girly games and apps than she knows what to do with - and they are free!! Oh and you will need a UK or USA iTunes account because the south African iTunes really sucks...
