Gastric bypass

Why does medical aids refuse to assist obese people with their health by paying for this operation? Especially if it is generic and the patient is at risk with high blood pressure etc. I really feel this is unfair and should be looked at as some overseas countries assist their citizens by paying for these operations.
Thanks

Hallo Esme
It depends on if the medical aid regards the operation as "cosmetic" or "treament". It is always possible to submit a special request with a motivation from your doctor to the medical aid administration to request a deviation from their "regular" rules.
