Fur Balls &  detecting if spayed

My cat has a tremendous problem with fur balls.
The vet can feel them in her tum.
She was a stray we took in a year ago.
Healthy otherwise and had her teeth scaled in December.
Her fur comes out on the top of her back.
She is not a long haired cat, kind of a cross Abby/Tabby and about 7 years old the vet says.
He can' t feel any sutures so we do not know if she has been spayed, but I feel that after a year kittens would have appeared.
She is slim (not a big cat 5.7kg) but has a very pronounced " apron" . We both need a tummy tuck I think.
It has been suggested we take her for a sonar at this cat clinic in Kenilworth.
