Our expert says:
Your lassie weighs much more than recommended for a 9-year-old girl. At 9 years she should only weigh about 26 kg, so although she is also much taller than most girls at 9 years (average height about 1.30 cm), her BMI = 19,8 which indicates overweight. I think it would be a good idea to have her checked by a medical dr esp because of the history of diabetes in your family. Rather safe, than sorry. If she should show signs of insulin resistance then PLEASE take her to a clinical dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: www.adsa.org.za and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area). In the meanwhile click on 'Child' at the top of this page and then on 'Nutrition' and read the articles on 'Schoolchildren'.
