It is a vitamin and should be started about 3 months before you plan to conceive. It helps prevent spina bifida.

Folic acid is a B Vitamin. Yes, you should use it before pregnancy. It helps to prevent neural tube defects (spina bifida, cleft palate etc) - which are caused by a defficiency in folic acid during the first three months of pregnancy.

You should be taking folic acid in the three months before you concieve and the first three months of your pregnancy. In other words, you should take it when you start trying to fall pregnant.

We all need folic acid whether we are pregnant or not, but an extra supplement is recommended during trying to get pregnant and the first three months for the reasons I've explained above.

Some cereals are fortified with folic acid and its also found in fruit and vegetables naturally.
