Finger nails.

Hello Doc, I have brittle finger nails. They appear to be healthy. they are well rounded, pink coloured smooth with no ridges, yet they break, chip and split easily. Could there be some dietary defiency do you think? Thank you.

Dear Patty
Factors that can influence finger nails are thyroid disease and iron deficiency. You could ask your gp to test both your thyroid and iron levels to see if this are factors that play a role in your brittle nails. The way you treat your nails (using artificial nails, damaging the nail bed, etc) can also affect their strength.
