Excrutiating stomach pain

I have recently experienced excrutiating tummy pain - which feels like someone has tied my intestines in knotts - a bit like cramp. It only lasts a minute or so but during that time, you're bent over and can't move. Then it completely disappears. This has happened on an empty stomach - without an apparent link to anything I've eaten and is not time of the month.

Do you know what this is and how to prevent a reoccurance?
