Hi CS...

a few years ago this site has helped me through a difficult time after a break goes on and we become our happy selves again.
This week I got an email from this ex wishing me a happy birthday. The first contact of any kind in about 3,5yrs! What the hell does that mean? I replied just saying thanks, but Im not convinced it is just random contact....

Do I just write it off and let it not bring back bad memories?

I broke off the relationship when she got involved in some pretty bad stuff. It was not a cool drifting apart kind of break up, but harsh and very emotional.

I see myself as fairly emotionally intelligent, but this kind of flips my mind...

Thanks
gino

Hi gino,
Thank, first, for the feedback --- I'm very pleased that we were able to help you that good while ago, and its good to hear from you again, especially on a generally positive note.
As for the recent contact from the Ex, hard to assess. Random contatcs DO happen, of course --- I've received e-mail greetings from people I hadnt heard from for 20 years. Obviously, too, she MIGHT have something else in mind, but of course one can't guess from a distance, and finding out what she might wat could require more contact than you want at this stage.
Absolutely definitively do not allow it to bring back bad memories or to awaken unrealistic hopes or fears. There would be no benefit from that.
But don't feel insecure on discovering that this can re-awaken good and/or bad emotional recollections from the past --- that's not any sign of emotional unintelligence, just a normal response
