Your are quite correct that water (tap, bottled and soda water) are still the best options as beverages because they do not contribute any energy to the diet. Rooibos tea, green tea, black tea and black coffee are next in line, but it is advisable not to drink more than 4 cups of coffee or 5 cups of tea a day because of the caffein content. Fruit juices do contain vitamin C and beta-carotene, but they also have a relatively high sugar content - up to 235 kJ per 100 ml which when compared to sweetened cola drinks (167 kJ per 100 ml) is actually higher. Some research indicates that ingesting liquid sugars (either added sucrose or fructose in fruit juices) can contribute more to overweight then eating solid sugars. The SA Food Tables list the following energy values for typical fruit juices per 100 ml: Apple - 204kJ; Apricot - 214 kJ; Granadilla - 208 kJ; Grape - 235 kJ; Grapefruit - 203 kJ; Guava - 200 kJ; Litchi - 211 kJ; Orange - 209 kJ. It is therefore better to drink fruit juice diluted with soda water or ice. The energy drinks are what their name says: rich in energy so they should only be used if you are exercising and need a rapid source of available energy. The best is to drink water, and moderate amounts of tea, coffee and diluted fruit juice. There is of course also the option to drink artificially sweetened cold drinks which do not contribute to energy intake.
