Don't worry (a bit long)

Life is quite an experience, isn't it? Sometimes it can seem great, and at other times it seems really difficult. A while ago I wrote about the ups and downs of life, and how some days we just don’t feel so good or positive about things. That’s to be expected, but having said that, we can still usually find ways to influence our mindsets positively even when we’re feeling down. One of the biggest sabotaging factors to this however, and one of the major culprits for making us feel down in the first place, is worry.

Worry is a terrible state because our brains learn to associate the negative emotions of worry with the situation we’re worrying about, thereby altogether making the whole experience much worse for us in the present, and in similar situations by association in the future too. Our minds can be crazily confusing, complex machines that at times seem to work outside of our conscious control. Worry is so counter-productive to our well-being and a positive frame of mind that we have to become aware of it when we’re doing it, and make every effort to stop ourselves in our tracks and redirect our thoughts when worry begins to manifest. Allowing ourselves to be consumed with worry is a one-way ticket downhill; we absolutely need to ensure our minds are re-focused in a positive way when we start to worry.

So how do we do this? Well, there are two primary ways: distraction and action.

When we realise we are starting to focus on something we are worried about, we should immediately do something to take the mind off it. Sometimes even a brief distraction can help to interrupt a negative thought process of ongoing worry, and help you then redirect your mind to something more positive and beneficial. You could phone someone or just get up and go somewhere. If you have a really nagging worry, you could try watching a gripping movie or perhaps taking the kids somewhere where you will also have fun. The bottom line is to distract your mind away from the worry. If you can do something that makes you feel good and happy, the worry will stop and you’ll feel a lot better.

If you are worrying about a situation that will not go away, or you’re worrying about something that keeps coming back to front of mind, the best remedy is to do something about it. For instance, a common worry among entrepreneurs is cash flow. You may be worried that there might not be enough money at the end of the month to pay all your bills, and focusing on this worry will probably make you think of the pain of not being able to pay your creditors, having them on your tail, etc. Distracting yourself in such an instance may be fine for a time, but such a worry is likely to materialise in actuality, and so distraction is not going to resolve the situation; you need to do something about it. By taking action to increase your income or making some additional money, you’ll be able to help yourself to stop worrying by resolving the problem which was causing your worry. I have learnt that money worries are solved only through being responsible, taking action and ensuring order and structure with regards to money. This way, I have found that it will always flow, especially when it’s needed.

Just remember that it is often through worrying that we attract the very situations that we fear and want to avoid into our lives. We need to remain positive, happy and focused on good outcomes. Though this may be a lot easier said than done at times, it is critical for our well-being and success.

its a good one i am forever worried and i will definitely find something to distract myself with or even take action.
