I do not think garlic tablets have been scientifically proven to keep fleas away, however many people believe it does. I still prefer to use a well proven and safe treatment, especially the new spot type remedies available from your veterinarian.
I do not know the dose of garlic tablets, however be careful with garlic, especially in small dogs, as it is potentially poisonous (it can destroy the blood cells if taken in excess -the same goes for onions, by the way)

Not sure if it is an old wives's tale, but I give my dogs a small teaspoon of freshly crushed garlic every couple of days, and they don't have fleas. Maybe the vet should confirm though?!
