Do nails tell of a lack of minerals etc.

My wife has thin fingernails and they have lines (groves) running down. Is this a lack of anything.

Dear Doug
Factors that can influence finger nails are thyroid disease and iron deficiency. Your wife should consult a Dermatologist who will do the necessary tests of both her thyroid and iron levels to see if these are factors that play a role in her brittle nails. The way nails are treated (using artificial nails, damaging the nail bed, exposure to harsh chemicals or detergents, etc) can also affect their strength.
