Diet to lower cholestrol

My farther has recently been diagnosed with high cholestrl. He is a 58 year old smoker and fairly active. Please can you recommend an eating plan for him to follow t lwer his chlestrol levels. He is currently taking medication prescribed by his GP.

Basically he will have to eat a diet that is low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol, and high in dietary fibre and protective nutrients - this entails eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, low-fat milk and dairy products, very lean meat, fish, only 4 eggs per week and only mono- or polyunsaturated margarine or oil. Click on 'Diet' and 'Weight loss' and 'Slimming Diet' for a copy of a low-fat, high-fibre diet - if he does not need to lose any weight he can use larger portions of the permitted foods, but should otherwise stick to the portion sizes. He needs to check the foods he buys in the supermarket - he should compare the total fat content of say standard Vienna sausages and that of Low-fat or Lean Viennas - if the latter still contain more than 5g of fat per 100g, then it is better to avoid them. Rather use less processed food, e.g. cook chicken without skin and without added fat (grill or boil in a stew), to have greater control of the fat content than when you eat processed foods.
He should also use omega-3 fatty acids (Salmon oil capsules - buy at chemist) to reduce blood cholesterol and try Flora pro-activ which contains plant sterols to lower blood cholesterol (most supermarkets sell this type of margarine). I trust the dr is addressing his smoking and is encouraging his physical activity.

The omega-3 fatty acids will certainly help.

The margarine is bad news. Margarine contains trans fats that actually RAISE the total cholesterol and change the HDL/LDL ratio in the wrong direction. Also messes up the tri-glyceride to LDL ratio.

The polyunsaturated oils, as cold-pressed oils ARE helpful.

Heating them and bubbling hydrogen gas through them turns them into a strange molecule that is almost a plastic. Margarine has NO good nutritional value, just kilojules and almost as much saturated fat as butter. It's just junk, but processed foods made with hydrogenated, or partially hydrogenated fats will last from now until Armegeddon, which is why they are used so much by the food industry.

Actually, the cholesterol isn't really a problem. The real issue is the weakening of the artery walls caused by a deficiency in vitamin C and one of the amino acids. Coronary artery disease has been shown to be an early form of scurvy. To compensate for the weaknesses that develop in the artery walls, the body produces a sticky lipoprotein (lipoprotein(a)) that causes LDLs to stick to the weak spots in the arteries. It's the body's way of repairing a puncture, so that we don't bleed to death internally.

The underlying problem is the nutritional deficiency. As a smoker, your father needs a lot more Vitamin C than a non-smoker. 5000 mg per day would not be excessive in his case.

Also, I recommend that you read up on the Low Carb way of life. Dr Atkins's book is good. Atkins was a cardiologist and found out that a low carb diet leads to weight loss and a huge improvement in the blood lipid profile while a low-fat diet will do just the opposite.

I mean no disrespect, DietDoc, but the latest research shows that the low-fat, high-fibre (hence high carb) approach is just plain wrong. All that it has lead to is a huge increase in obesity and diabetes and other health problems such as cancer and heart disease.

Likewise, the latest research shows that fatty deposits are the result of coronary artery disease, not the cause.

More research is piling up by the day that shows that nutrition is the key to health, drugs don't work very well, and that the Pharmaceutical companies are doing "business in disease" (by producing products like Aspartame). Prescription drugs are now the third leading cause of death in North America so we need to read the truth about these things.
