Our expert says:
I would strongly urge you to contact the Department of Health, Directorate: Nutrition or one of your Provincial Health Departments as they should be able to give you diet guidelines for these children who need additional energy, protein and all the vitamins and minerals. Good inexpensive sources of energy are the fortified maize meal, for protein use low-fat milk powder, vit A use pumpkin, butternut, yellow sweet potatoes, yellow peaches, pawpaw, etc (when in season), for vit C use cabbage, oranges, guavas, pawpaw, mangoes, basically any fruit or vegetable you can obtain that is in season and inexpensive. The reason why I would recommend the Dept of Health is that they may also be able to direct you to certain feeding schemes and supplements such as PVM that can be used successfully for the treatment of this disease.
