Our expert says:
Congratulations on your pregnancy. It is a well-known fact that pregnancy can be associated with constipation due to hormonal changes, the developing baby pressing on the digestive organs and lack of exercise . It is, however, essential that you do NOT use any harsh laxatives, including so-called 'natural or herbal' ones, as these can cause dehydration, loss of essential nutrients, abdominal cramps and other complications. Increase the amount of dietary fibre you eat every day (high-bran cereals, fruit and vegetables, wholewheat bread and crackers, brown rice) and also have 2-3 tablespoons of boiled dried fruit with your high-fibre breakfast cereal every day. Increase the amount of liquid you drink too (add 3 cups of water to your daily intake). Gentle exercise (if permitted by your dr or gynae) also promotes bowel motions. If these measures should not prove successful, then discuss the use of Fybogel with your dr or gynae.
