People say if you have depression you are the one who determines how long it will last and you are the one who controls it and that you are the only one that can get out of the depression, is this true ?

No, not in the least true. yes, it is up to you to recognize the situation and seek and work with appropriate help, but it not something anyone chooses to have, nor can you just change your mind one day and suddenly be free of it. I believe there has to be some effort from the individual, and no one can be helped unless they do want to be helped. In lots of cases medication will assist in being able to think more clearly which results in your being able to start helping yourself.
