This all depends on the veterinary practice you go to. To give you a rough estimate the scale and polish procedure will cost between about R600 and R1200 depending upon how long it takes. In animals with heavy calculus deposits it can take up to an hour to remove it using sophisticated ultrasonic equipment. Your local vet will be able toi give you a more accurate estimate. Please remember to always ask if the estimate includes: anaesthetic, hospitalisation, antibiotics and other consumables.

This is normally done under general anaesthetic, and the cost would depend partly on what type of anaesthetic is used, and also on the size of the dog - ie, how much of the anaesthetic would be required. So it's not really possible to give a meaningful answer... other than saying it's likely to be quite a few hundred Rands.

It's a really good idea to have your dog's teeth cleaned if they need it, especially if your dog is approaching its 'golden years' - ie, getting on a bit. There is evidence that neglected teeth can impact the dog's overall health, including the possibility of cardiac problems.

(The same appears to apply to humans, by the way... another reason not to avoid the dentist too enthusiastically!)
