Deformed toenail due to fungi

Many years ago I had a bad athletes foot infection that affected my toe nails too. I used a cream preescribed by my doc and it cleared up. The problem is that one of my toenails (the little one) became deformed and looks disgusting, so I never go barefoot. If I ask my dos to remove the nail, will it grow back normal, or deformed?
